A short drive north took them out of the heart of the bustling city of Spokane and into the country. Once in Chattaroy, it was hard for Abigail to believe there was a major city just a few miles down the highway. Wyatt took an exit and they were soon driving on a gravel road surrounded by fields and farms. Turning off the gravel road, they came to a dirt road lined with pine trees on both sides. The thicket of trees was so dense that it was impossible to see very far in either direction.
Pulling her camera up from her lap, she snapped pictures of the trees.
The trees soon thinned as they drove up a slight incline in the road to a farm. A big red barn was to the left, a garage on the right, and then beyond the garage sat a farmhouse.
“Do you know the people who live here?”
He nodded. “I met Sharon and Ervin at a diner in Newport last time I was in the area, and they told me about their property. They insisted that I come out for a visit to see the place after I told them I was looking for a farm for an upcoming novel.”
“Wow, that’s fun.”
Peering over at her, he nodded. “It is fun. Leroy is my main character for the story I’m working on right now. He’s been a little difficult lately, going off from the main plot line I had in mind, but it just adds to the fun when that happens.”
As he parked the car, he turned toward the field past the barn and pointed. “That’s an old Cadillac that Leroy was searching through the last time I wrote of him.”
“What was he looking for?”
Wyatt shrugged. “I don’t know . . . yet.”
They got out of the car and headed toward the farmhouse. A woman came hurrying down the sidewalk leading up to the farmhouse to greet the two of them.
“Wyatt! It’s been too long!” She met the two of them on the sidewalk, hugging Wyatt immediately.
Patting her back as they hugged, Wyatt released. “Hello, Sharon. Where’s Ervin?”
“He’s at a cattle sale over in Quincy right now, but he’ll be back by sundown. What brings you back to Chattaroy?” Her eyes glanced over at Abigail momentarily and then back at Wyatt. Her lips curled into a smile. “Are you bringing your bride home?”
A blush crawled up Abigail’s neck and into her cheeks. Wyatt went crimson as well but laughed and shook his head as he glanced over at Abigail. “No. This is my friend, Abigail. She’s going to take some pictures, if you don’t mind. I’m including the barn again and I wanted some fresh images. I should’ve snapped some pictures on my last visit.”
“I’m sorry. I assumed you two were married.” Sharon touched Abigail’s arm as she shook her head. “I really didn’t mean anything by it.”
Smiling, Abigail shrugged. “It’s okay. You have a really lovely farm.”
“Thank you. You know, we moved here in 1974 and
